-Coolest Band Ever? will be a weekly column on this blog in which I state the case for certain bands in regards to their ultimate hipness- Spacemen 3 may be the coolest band ever. I don’t mean cool like you would want to hang out with them (I mean look at that picture! Those guys look like total dicks). I mean cool in the sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll sense. Spacemen 3 are not my favorite band, not all their music is the amazing, but they exude a sense of “fuck you” that few bands muster. They made uncompromising drone-y music that had no chance of commercial success. Few bands can actually make you feel like you are on drugs when you have taken no drugs. Spacemen 3 were one of those bands. Let me state their case. The two leaders of the group, Jason Pierce and Pete Kember, go by the names, J. Spaceman and Sonic Boom. Awesome song names like: ‘Ecstasy Symphony’ and ‘Transparent Radiation (Flashback)’. They made an album titled: Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To. These guys let you know their angle. None of that, “Now which one is the walrus?” shit. They created two of the best albums of the 1980’s: The Perfect Perscription and Playing with Fire and in the process are single-handedly responsible for The Brian Jonestown Massacre. In true rock n’ roll fashion J. Spaceman and Sonic Boom ended up hating each others guts so much that for their last album they recorded their individual songs separately. Let me know who you think is the coolest band ever.
